1500 Bhil Meena sacrificed their lives for independence -

Govind Guru

(This post is based upon an article published in a magazine ‘Meena Bharati’, September-October 2007 issue. I came to know about it through my colleague Vasundhara Meena. I am grateful to her.)

Govind Guru (Govind Guru) was born on December 30, 1858, in Basipa Village, District Dungarpur in a Banjara (gypsy) family. In the area of Bhils in Southern Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh this aboriginal community was a slave of two masters. They were slaves to the British but more sadly they were slaves to local feudal, vassals and petty self-made kings those not only exploited this community but also went to the lowest levels of moral values to keep this tribe in abject poverty.  An incident of a massacre on the occasion of a religious ceremony held at Mangarh hill is an apt example.

Guru Govind, a socially conscious and religious personality had launched a different kind of struggle against social evils prevailing in Bhils and Garasis. At that time an organization named Samp Sabha was the symbol of unity of tribes in Gujrat. The number of devotees in the organization had reached 5 lakhs. A goal of this organization was to get their tribe free from the system of forced labour. The movement was getting momentum and was strong enough to end the rule of feudal and vassals etc. From the other end, feudal and vassals were conspiring to crush it. They propagated that Guru Govind was a threat to British rule and got him arrested. The tribe took it as a challenge and they had to release Guru Govind. It did not end here. Atrocities against the tribals were increased. In addition to violent attacks, the main objective was to shut down their schools. The British masters were misinformed and told that tribals had been organizing mutiny against the British rule and wanted to establish their own State. During that period one Bhil Punja Dhira killed a policeman (thanedar) of Gathra village, Santrampur, Gujrat because Thanedar was giving them brutal treatment and tribals were fed up with him. The incident was promoted as treason and military assistance from the British was requested.

In December 1908, like every year, a religious ceremony ‘Magh Purnima’ was prearranged on Mangadh hill. Bhil Meena (including women, children and old men) had gathered for a religious ceremony. Those Bhil Meena, influenced by the freedom movement, were also raising slogans against the British, vassals, feudal and petty kings.

False rumours were spread that the half-million Bhils had gathered on the hill and intended to attack Santrampur district. The army of the British and the feudal surrounded the hill from three sides and millions of unarmed people were indiscriminately fired at. In order to save their lives, many people ran towards Khaidapa valley and were killed in a stampede.

It is said that 1500 Bhil Meena died in this massacre. (Most of the references mention 1500 as the number). After the massacre, the area was declared ‘restricted area’. The purpose was to destroy evidence and prevent documentation. But - "Blood is blood after all if dropped it remains in the earth.” Now people celebrate this martyrdom day on 17 November every year.

In the incidence of Jallianwala Bagh 379 people had died. Shouldn’t Mangadh incidence be given the same place in history as was given to Jallianwala Bagh incidence? These brave people are the aboriginal tribe of India. Is their sacrifice and sense of freedom less important?

This struggle makes the real sense of 'Vande Mataram' of freedom struggle of Bhils because this land belongs to them. They are aboriginals of this land. Their struggle is not yet over. Their land is still grabbed and the law is not in their favour.

Mangadh Hill is undoubtedly memorial of martyrs of Independence. Magh Purnima festival is held even today.

  7. I do not understand why "meena" is attached here with "bheel" identity ...that struggle and awakening was purely a BHEEL activity ...there is huge difference between socio-economic levels of bheels and meenas and they are totally different clan and cast ...no need to share the pride
